New PDU Categories

As of March 1st, 2011, the Project Management Institute (PMI) changed the Professional Development Unit (PDU) Category Structure.  This change was based on research and survey feedbacks from PMI members and credential holders. The new categories are much more user-friendly, easier to understand and easier to report against.

What changed?

  • PDU categories have been simplified and reduced from 18 categories to just 6
  • The old categories were defined in numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. The new categories are defined in letters A, B, C, D, E, F
  • Categories have been expanded to include Web 2.0 learning opportunities
  • There are limits on certain categories to ensure credential holders pursue some sort of project management continuing education activity

What did not change?

  • The three year renewal cycle remains the same
  • Uniformity across categories is kept: one hour of learning activity is equivalent to one PDU earned
  • Number of PDUs required to maintain the credential remains the same
  • Recertification fee structure

Please refer to PMI website for a detailed discussion. Here is the link to the new categories on PMI web site: PDU Categories

How to Claim PDUs

You will see a phrase like "14.0 PDUs - Category A" or "14.0 PDUs - Category B" in the description of our courses.

The majority of our training courses are in Category A. These are courses that have been assigned a PMI activity number (during the review by the PMI under the R.E.P program).

The rest are in Category B, which means you can earn PDUs but the course does not have a specific PMI activity number (there are too many qualified courses for the PMI to review all of them). Our Category B courses are qualified for earning PDUs and map well to one or more knowledge areas of the PMBOK Guide, and that's all you need for acceptance by the PMI under Category B.

Here is what that means for your ability to earn PDU credit:

Earn PDU Category A

Category A

  • Reviewed by PMI (with a PMI Activity Number under REP program)
  • Complete course and score 75% on tests (you can retake)
  • Print a PDU certificate for your files in case of audit
  • Submit to PMI, find the PMI course # listed under REP# 1008 (Skillsoft)
Earn PDU Category B

Category B

  • Developed by an REP (but no PMI Activity Number assigned)
  • Complete the course with test scores of 75% (you can retake)
  • Print transcript and description for your files in case of audit
  • Submit to PMI (Map to PMBOK Knowledge Areas or Processes)

Our training courses are created by a Registered Education Provider (REP) of the PMI. No one has ever reported having even a single PDU from our online courses rejected by the PMI. All you need to do is to choose what you want to learn, what will help you the most right now. Then just test the course and keep your documentation in case of audit.
